I’m trying to figure out what I should do with my life. I have a few vague notions (I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed.), I know the kinds of things I’m interested in, and I know what I would do with myself if I didn’t have to worry about earning my daily bread, but how to go from point A to point C still eludes me. As such, I’m going to use this blog as my platform to explore well-known development advice, in this case “where do you see yourself in five years?”.
Well, here goes. In five years, I will be 40 years old. 40 isn’t ancient, and I’m not some narcissist afraid of gray hair and love handles. My fear is that I won’t be any closer to my longterm goals (land, home, work at home in a workshop/office) then than I am now.
In five years, I most definitely want to be out of telecom. There doesn’t seem to be much value for employee work/life balance and the corporate culture here leaves a LOT to be desired. From my research that seems to be standard for most telecom companies.
In Five Years I want:
To own land, hopefully more than an acre.
To have figured out a career path and achieved journeyman status
Finish off the last bit of debt I have remaining
Continue improving as a father and husband
Have at least 10 hours a week to devote to my personal projects, hopefully using some of these to develop an entrepreneurial income stream.
Hopefully find a way to become a serious member at my church and not be so flaky all the time.
Not beat myself up for minor mistakes and accept my shortcomings while also celebrate my achievements.
Learned to play enough guitar to strum along with a few songs by the campfire.
Become a seasoned homesteader (along with my wife and kids).
